Xbox pre-loading opens worldwide on Tuesday, November 10 at 12 a.m. GMT, and the game launches November 19\. A 512GB Xbox Series S has only about 364 GB usable, so GTA 6 takes more than half of it. Rockstar says the pre-load "will require up to 212 GB depending on your device," and hasn't published separate Series X and Series S numbers. A day-one patch can add more, so leave headroom. Boxed copies won't save you the download either. Rockstar says code-in-box versions reach retailers from November 12, so the game still installs over the internet. ## How much free space will your Xbox have after GTA 6? **A 512GB Series S drops to about 152 GB free after GTA 6.** A 1TB Series X keeps about 590 GB. The Series S is the console that really needs a plan. In Microsoft's [Xbox Wire storage primer](https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2020/09/24/xbox-series-x-and-xbox-series-s-custom-storage-solution-primer/?ref=geekyinc.com), USB 3.1 drives can *store* games optimized for Series X|S "for quick transfer and play," while the Expansion Card delivers "the exact same consistent, sustained, gameplay performance" as the internal SSD. Seagate's [expansion card FAQ](https://www.seagate.com/products/gaming-drives/xbox-gaming/storage-expansion-for-xbox-series-x/faq/?ref=geekyinc.com) is more direct: optimized games have to be moved off an external drive to the internal SSD or a card before you can play them. A USB drive is still useful, as a parking lot for everything else. Older Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games play straight from USB, and Series X|S games can sit there until you copy them back. Before then: 1. Check free space under Settings → System → Storage devices. You need 212 GB on the drive GTA 6 will install to. 2. If you're adding a card, plug it into the Storage Expansion slot on the back and set it as the default install location for games. 3. Move older games to a USB drive if you need the room (Manage games and add-ons → select → Move). 4. Yes, if you clear room. A 512GB Series S has about 364 GB usable, so GTA 6 fits with about 152 GB to spare. You'll be able to keep roughly one other big game installed alongside it. ### Can I play GTA 6 from an external SSD on Xbox? No. A USB SSD is faster for copying games back, but Series X|S games have to be played from the internal drive or a Storage Expansion Card. Only the card expands where you can play GTA 6 from. ### Does the expansion card load GTA 6 slower than internal storage? No. Microsoft says the Expansion Card was built to deliver the same sustained gameplay performance as the internal SSD. ### Will GTA 6 get bigger after launch? Probably. Rockstar's 212 GB is the pre-load figure, and a day-one patch is common for a launch this size. Keep 30 to 50 GB of headroom beyond the 212 GB if you can.
