Bleach Manga Reading Order: Every Arc, Volume & Where TYBW Starts (2026)

Bleach is 74 volumes and 686 chapters, told in five arcs with no required side reading. That makes the reading order simple: start at Volume 1 and go straight through. The real question most readers have is where to jump in, especially if you've watched the anime and want the manga's version of the Thousand-Year Blood War. This guide maps every arc to its volumes and chapters, tells you exactly where the anime leaves off, and covers the cheapest way to own the whole thing.

Quick Answer: Where to Start Bleach

• Brand new to Bleach: start at Volume 1, or save money with the 3-in-1 Edition Vol. 1 (Vols. 1–3).
• Finished the original 366-episode anime: jump to Volume 55, Chapter 480. That is the first chapter of the Thousand-Year Blood War, the arc the old anime never reached.
• Only want the finale (Ichigo vs Yhwach): it's in the last volumes. Grab the 2-in-1 Edition collecting Vols. 73 & 74.

Every Bleach Arc by Volume

1. Agent of the Shinigami: Volumes 1–8

Ichigo Kurosaki, a teenager who can see ghosts, takes on Soul Reaper powers from Rukia Kuchiki and starts cleaning up Hollows in Karakura Town. It's the most episodic stretch of the series, and it sets up nearly every character who matters later. Don't skip it. Uryu, Chad, Orihime and Urahara all get their footing here.

2. Soul Society: Volumes 8–21

Rukia is taken back to the Soul Society to be executed, and Ichigo's crew breaks in to rescue her. This is where Bleach finds its identity: the Gotei 13 captains, Bankai, and the twist that reshapes the whole series. Many fans consider it the high point of the pre-war manga. The first Bleach box set ends exactly here, at Volume 21.

3. Arrancar: Volumes 21–48

The longest arc by far, and it runs in three phases: the Arrancar arrive in the human world, Ichigo invades Hueco Mundo to rescue Orihime, and the Gotei 13 make their stand at Fake Karakura Town. It holds the fights most people remember from the anime (Ichigo vs Grimmjow, Ichigo vs Ulquiorra, the war against Aizen), and it closes out the first half of the story. Box Set 2 (Vols. 22–48) covers almost all of it.

4. The Lost Agent: Volumes 49–54

A short, quieter arc set after a time skip. Ichigo has lost his powers, and a group of Fullbringers offers to give them back. It's the last arc the original anime adapted, and the bridge into the final war.

5. Thousand-Year Blood War: Volumes 55–74 (The Final Arc)

The Quincy of the Wandenreich, led by Yhwach, declare war on the Soul Society. It's 20 volumes of the series' biggest fights, the Royal Guard, the origin of Ichigo's powers, and the final battle between Ichigo and Yhwach. This is the arc the Thousand-Year Blood War anime adapts, and it's the reason most people pick up the manga now. Start with 3-in-1 Edition Vol. 19 (Vols. 55–57).

Where Does the Anime Leave Off in the Manga?

• Original anime (2004–2012, 366 episodes): ends with the Lost Agent arc, which is Chapter 479 / Volume 54. Pick up the manga at Chapter 480, Volume 55. The anime's filler arcs (the Bounts, the Gotei 13 Invasion and others) are anime-only, so skipping them costs you nothing in the manga.
• Thousand-Year Blood War anime (2022–2026): adapts Volumes 55–74 across four cours: The Blood Warfare, The Separation, The Conflict and the final cour, The Calamity. It follows the manga closely and adds scenes Kubo supervised, so reading the manga afterward still gives you the original pacing, plus a few moments the anime reworked.

Where Is the Ichigo vs Yhwach Fight in the Manga?

The final confrontation runs through roughly Chapters 670–685, and Chapter 686 is the "10 years later" epilogue. All of it is in Volume 74, the last volume. The 2-in-1 Edition (Vols. 73 & 74) is the cheapest way to hold the whole ending in one book.

How Many Volumes Is Bleach?

• Can't Fear Your Own World: a three-volume light novel by Ryohgo Narita that follows the Soul Society after Yhwach. It's prose, not manga, so it's for readers who want more of the world and don't need more of Ichigo.
