The best Path of Exile 2 (PoE2) 1.0 league starter builds are Disciple of Varashta Djinn minions, Hollow Form Whirling Assault Martial Artist and Twister Gemling Legionnaire. Right behind them are Grim Pillars Spell Totem Oracle, Twisters Spirit Walker and Ice Shot Deadeye. All six carried fresh characters through the last Early Access league without trade gear, and none of them is a direct target of anything GGG has announced for 1.0.

Path of Exile 2 launches as a free-to-play 1.0 on December 11, 2026, together with the Conquerors of Wraeclast challenge league (GGG's announcement). The full patch notes aren't out yet. This page ranks starters on the final Early Access data and flags the specific 1.0 risk for each build, so you can re-check your pick in five minutes when the notes drop.

Pre-launch guide. We'll update these picks when the 1.0 patch notes are published (expected about a week before launch, per Game8), and again a week after December 11 with real launch-ladder data.

The first four are S tier on Maxroll's league starter tier list (updated November 3, 2026), and the last two are A tier. Our order differs: we put the minion and totem builds first because they're the most forgiving, and we rank Gemling third because of its 1.0 risk.

How we picked these starters

A good league starter in PoE2 needs four things: it clears the campaign without trade gear, it has a defensive layer from the start, it doesn't depend on one unique item, and it scales into maps on the gear you find. We cross-checked expert tier lists against what players actually played. The poe.ninja ladder for Forbidden Rites (124,121 characters, November 7, 2026) is led by Gemling Legionnaire at 32.7%, followed by Martial Artist (10.5%), Oracle (7.3%), Disciple of Varashta (7.2%), Spirit Walker (6.8%) and Deadeye (6.0%). That's every class on this list.

1. Djinn minions: Disciple of Varashta (Sorceress)

A Path of Exile 2 Sorceress' frost explosion freezing a pack of monsters in the snow

The Disciple of Varashta Djinn summoner is the safest PoE2 1.0 league start, because your minions take the hits and do the damage while you stay back. It's on Maxroll's S tier, and GGG featured a Fire and Ice Djinni Summoner by Dr3adful as an official build showcase.

  • Why it starts well: minion builds care less about your weapon, so bad early drops don't stall you.
  • Defensive layer: distance. Enemies focus the Djinn.
  • 1.0 risk: low. Nothing announced targets the Disciple. Watch the support gem rebalance for minion supports.

2. Hollow Form Whirling Assault: Martial Artist (Monk)

Hollow Form Whirling Assault is the best melee league starter going into 1.0. The Martial Artist was the most-played Ascendancy in the first two weeks of 0.5 (GGG's recap), and Maxroll has this build in S tier. If you'd rather throw lightning, the Falling Thunder Martial Artist is A tier and plays off the same Ascendancy.

  • Why it starts well: quarterstaff skills come early, and Monk mobility makes campaign bosses easier to dodge.
  • Defensive layer: evasion and staying on the move.
  • 1.0 risk: medium. The passive tree overhaul changes every melee pathing. The core skills aren't named in any announced nerf.

3. Twister: Gemling Legionnaire (Mercenary)

A Path of Exile 2 Mercenary's grenade barrage exploding across a red cavern

Gemling Legionnaire is the most-played Ascendancy on the final Early Access ladder, and Twister Gemling is S tier on Maxroll, but it carries the most 1.0 risk on this list. Gemling's strength is how much it gets out of skill and support gems. GGG says support gems have been "massively rebalanced" for 1.0 and that Mercenary reloading "has been changed" (GGG).

  • Why it starts well: flexible. Gemling can make most skill setups work on a budget.
  • Defensive layer: armour and evasion from the Mercenary side of the tree.
  • 1.0 risk: high. Check the support gem changes before you commit.

4. Grim Pillars Spell Totem: Oracle (Druid)

A spiral of fire spells erupting through a Path of Exile 2 ruin

The Grim Pillars Spell Totem Oracle is the lowest-effort league starter in PoE2: totems cast for you, so you can play defensively from the first act. It's S tier on Maxroll, and Oracle held 7.3% of the Forbidden Rites ladder.

  • Why it starts well: totems keep damage going while you dodge.
  • Defensive layer: range and positioning.
  • 1.0 risk: low. The Druid isn't named in any announced rework.

5. Twisters: Spirit Walker (Huntress)

A Path of Exile 2 Huntress throwing a lightning-charged spear in a dark forest

The Twisters Spirit Walker is A tier on Maxroll and was the most-played Ascendancy of the whole Runes of Aldur league, at 28.4% on poe.ninja. Twister was also a top-five skill in 0.5 (GGG's recap). The Minion Army Spirit Walker is the A-tier alternative if you prefer a summoner.

  • Why it starts well: spear projectiles clear packs from range early on.
  • Defensive layer: evasion plus spirit companions that draw aggro.
  • 1.0 risk: medium. It's popular, which makes it a common balance target. We'll know more from the patch notes.

6. Ice Shot: Deadeye (Ranger)

A Path of Exile 2 ranged exile firing projectiles at a giant ogre beside a lava field

Ice Shot Deadeye is the classic bow league starter, A tier on Maxroll, and Deadeye was the third most-played Ascendancy in early 0.5. Lightning Arrow Deadeye, the old favourite, has dropped to B tier, so start with Ice Shot.

  • Why it starts well: bows get going early, and Deadeye's projectile bonuses clear packs from range.
  • Defensive layer: range and evasion. It's the most fragile build here if you get caught.
  • 1.0 risk: low. Deadeye isn't in GGG's announced rework list.

Your day-one plan for Conquerors of Wraeclast

A bearded commander from GGG's official Conquerors of Wraeclast league trailer for Path of Exile 2

Conquerors of Wraeclast is a strategy league: you recruit troops, siege castles, and earn a new crafting material from castle treasuries that lets you reforge gear (GGG). In the endgame you build a stronghold, choose one of three factions, and hand Atlas progression to your commanders.

  1. Pick a starter from the top four. A safe campaign matters more than a high ceiling in week one.
  2. Read the patch notes against the "1.0 risk" column. If your build's core support gem gets hit, swap to the Djinn or totem build.
  3. Treat the new acts as unknown. Acts 5 and 6 add 24 areas and 18 new bosses, so pack more defence than you think you need.
  4. Save the Duelist and Shadow for your second character. Our reasoning is in the PoE2 1.0 tier list.

PoE2 1.0 league starter FAQ

What is the easiest league starter in Path of Exile 2 1.0?

The Disciple of Varashta Djinn summoner or the Grim Pillars Spell Totem Oracle. Both let you play from range while something else does the damage.

Is Path of Exile 2 1.0 free?

Yes. It goes free-to-play on December 11, 2026 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Will Early Access builds still work in 1.0?

Mostly, but the passive tree overhaul and support gem rebalance will change the details of every build. Use the skill and Ascendancy here, then follow an updated guide for the tree once the patch is live.

Should I start the new Duelist or Shadow?

Not if you want the smoothest start. New classes usually launch with less gear and tree support than established ones.

The bottom line

For a safe PoE2 1.0 start, play the Djinn Disciple of Varashta or the Grim Pillars Oracle. For melee, play the Hollow Form Whirling Assault Martial Artist. Gemling is still the strongest on paper, but check the support gem notes first. Then come back for the patch-note update, and see our most fun PoE2 builds for your second character.
