The best build in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is a Breton spellsword: Blade, Heavy Armour and Destruction on one character, with Restoration to keep you standing. A pure mage is the strongest once its spells are in place, the Bosmer stealth archer is the easiest to play, and a heavy-armour tank is the safest pick for Master difficulty. All four are below, each with the race, birthsign, custom class and gear to aim for.
Oblivion Remastered came out on April 22, 2025 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and reached Nintendo Switch 2 on August 11, 2026. The last balance change was Update 1.2 in July 2025, which added the Journeyman difficulty and separate damage sliders. Everything since then has been bug fixes, so these builds still apply in 2026.
How leveling works in Oblivion Remastered (and why builds changed)

In the remaster, every skill earns XP toward your next level, and each level gives you 12 Virtue points to put into attributes. Major skills earn more XP than minor ones. You no longer have to avoid raising your major skills to level "efficiently", which is the old trick most 2006 build guides were built around (PC Gamer).
- Virtue points: 12 per level, with at most 5 in any one attribute. Luck costs 4 points for +1 (Sportskeeda's breakdown).
- Endurance is retroactive. Raising it now adds HP for every level you've already gained, so you don't have to rush it early anymore.
- What it means for builds: pick the seven major skills you'll actually use. In the original you had to work around your majors. In the remaster they're simply your fastest route to the next level.
Oblivion Remastered builds at a glance
| Build | Race | Birthsign | Best for | Difficulty to play |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spellsword | Breton | The Mage | First playthrough, any quest line | Easy |
| Pure mage | Altmer or Breton | The Atronach | Highest late-game power, custom spells | Hard early, easy late |
| Stealth archer | Bosmer (Wood Elf) | The Thief or The Shadow | Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood | Easy |
| Heavy-armour tank | Breton | The Lord | Master difficulty, Oblivion Gates | Easy |
Race and birthsign picks line up with the most common choices across build guides (Beebom, GuruGamer, GuruGamer stealth). The custom-class skill choices and the ranking are ours.
1. Spellsword build (best overall)

The spellsword is the best Oblivion Remastered build for most players because it can handle any fight and any quest line. You hit with a blade, cast Destruction at range, heal with Restoration and shield yourself with Alteration. The Breton's built-in magic resistance covers the warrior's main weakness, enemy mages.
| Custom class | Pick |
|---|---|
| Specialization | Magic |
| Favored attributes | Strength, Willpower |
| Major skills | Blade, Block, Heavy Armor, Destruction, Restoration, Alteration, Conjuration |
| Key gear | Goldbrand (Boethiah's shrine quest), any Shield-enchanted armour |
Pick Magic as your specialization even though you're half warrior: Blade and Heavy Armor level quickly from fighting anyway, and the bonus helps the spell schools that are slower to train. Conjuration earns its place early on, because a summoned skeleton or scamp takes hits while you close the distance.
2. Pure mage build (strongest late game)

A pure mage is the most powerful build in Oblivion Remastered once you can make your own spells at the Arcane University. Magic in the remaster is, as PC Gamer puts it, "even more busted" than in the original, and spellmaking is where that shows.
| Custom class | Pick |
|---|---|
| Specialization | Magic |
| Favored attributes | Intelligence, Willpower |
| Major skills | Destruction, Restoration, Alteration, Conjuration, Mysticism, Illusion, Alchemy |
| Key gear | Azura's Star (reusable soul gem), Fortify Magicka enchantments |
The Atronach birthsign gives a huge Magicka pool but stops natural Magicka regeneration, so carry restore-Magicka potions (Alchemy is a major skill for that reason). If that sounds like too much bookkeeping, take The Mage instead and give up some of the ceiling for an easier early game.
About Weakness to Magic stacking: the classic trick of stacking Weakness to Magic and Weakness to Fire on one custom spell doesn't behave the same way in the remaster. Players report that combined custom spells no longer amplify each other like they used to. Test it on a mudcrab before you build around it.

3. Stealth archer build (easiest)

The Bosmer stealth archer is the easiest Oblivion Remastered build: sneak, draw, and land a sneak-attack shot before the enemy knows you're there. It fits the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood quest lines perfectly. Wood Elves start with a Marksman bonus and can command animals.
| Custom class | Pick |
|---|---|
| Specialization | Stealth |
| Favored attributes | Agility, Speed |
| Major skills | Marksman, Sneak, Light Armor, Security, Acrobatics, Illusion, Alchemy |
| Key gear | Gray Cowl of Nocturnal (Thieves Guild), Chameleon-enchanted gear |
Chameleon from enchanted gear still stacks to 100% in the remaster (bo3.gg guide). At that point enemies can't see you at all, and the build goes from easy to trivial. If you'd rather stab than shoot, swap Marksman for Blade, play a Khajiit with The Shadow birthsign, and you have the assassin variant.
4. Heavy-armour tank build (best for Master difficulty)

A Breton tank in heavy armour born under The Lord is the safest Oblivion Remastered build on Master difficulty. Enemies hit far harder there, and this build is the one that can absorb it: magic resistance from the race, healing from the birthsign, and Block and Heavy Armor doing the rest.
| Custom class | Pick |
|---|---|
| Specialization | Combat |
| Favored attributes | Strength, Endurance |
| Major skills | Blade or Blunt, Block, Heavy Armor, Armorer, Athletics, Restoration, Hand to Hand |
| Key gear | Umbra (Clavicus Vile's shrine quest), the best Heavy Armor you can repair |
Armorer belongs on the list because repairing your own heavy armour keeps it at full value on Master. Endurance is a favored attribute because of the remaster's retroactive HP: every point you add raises your health for every level you've already gained.
Which old Oblivion exploits still work?

100% Chameleon still works, spellmaking is still overpowered, and Weakness to Magic stacking is unreliable. Here's how the famous tricks hold up, based on player reports since launch:
| Exploit | Status in the remaster | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 100% Chameleon from stacked enchantments | Works | bo3.gg |
| Custom Jump/Speed spells for map-crossing leaps | Works, arguably better than before | PC Gamer |
| Six-figure Magicka pools | Works with enough Fortify stacking | OpenCritic |
| Weakness to Magic + element stacking on one spell | Inconsistent; cast the weakness separately | Steam discussion |
| Minor-skill "efficient leveling" | No longer needed | PC Gamer |
Oblivion Remastered builds FAQ
What is the best race in Oblivion Remastered?
Breton for most builds, because natural magic resistance helps every playstyle. Altmer for a pure mage, Bosmer for an archer.
What is the best birthsign?
The Mage for a spellsword, The Atronach for a pure mage (as long as you plan for its lack of Magicka regeneration), and The Lord for a Master-difficulty tank.
Do I still need efficient leveling in Oblivion Remastered?
No. Every skill counts toward leveling, and you get a flat 12 Virtue points per level, so you can just play.
Is Oblivion Remastered harder than the original?
It's as hard as you want it to be. Update 1.2 added a Journeyman difficulty and separate sliders for the damage you deal and the damage you take, so you can tune fights on top of the usual Novice-to-Legendary range.
The bottom line
Start with the Breton spellsword if you want one character that can do every quest line. Go pure mage if you want to break the game with spellmaking, stealth archer if you want the easiest run, and the heavy-armour tank if you're playing on Master.
