Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) needs up to 212 GB of free space on Xbox Series X|S. That's Rockstar's figure from its pre-load announcement (November 3, 2026). Xbox pre-loading opens worldwide on Tuesday, November 10 at 12 a.m. GMT, and the game launches November 19. A 512GB Xbox Series S has only about 364 GB usable, so GTA 6 takes more than half of it.
Below: how much room each Xbox has left after GTA 6, why a USB drive won't let you play it, and which Storage Expansion Card to buy with the stock actually on Amazon right now.
Updated November 7, 2026. Prices and stock checked on Amazon US the same day. We'll add the exact Xbox install size once pre-load opens.
How much space does GTA 6 need on Xbox Series X|S?
Plan for 212 GB free. Rockstar says the pre-load "will require up to 212 GB depending on your device," and hasn't published separate Series X and Series S numbers. A day-one patch can add more, so leave headroom.
Boxed copies won't save you the download either. Rockstar says code-in-box versions reach retailers from November 12, so the game still installs over the internet.
How much free space will your Xbox have after GTA 6?
A 512GB Series S drops to about 152 GB free after GTA 6. A 1TB Series X keeps about 590 GB. The Series S is the console that really needs a plan. The last column shows how many more 100 GB-class games fit, for a sense of what's left.
| Console | Usable space (empty) | GTA 6 (up to) | Free after GTA 6 | GTA 6 share of usable space | More 100 GB games that fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S (512GB) | ~364 GB | 212 GB | ~152 GB | ~58% | 1 |
| Xbox Series S (1TB) | ~800 GB | 212 GB | ~588 GB | ~27% | 5 |
| Xbox Series X (1TB) | ~802 GB | 212 GB | ~590 GB | ~26% | 5 |
| Xbox Series X (2TB) | ~1.6 TB | 212 GB | ~1.39 TB | ~13% | 13 |
| Any Series X|S + 1TB card | add ~1 TB | 212 GB | all of the above + ~1 TB | n/a | +9 to 10 |
| Any Series X|S + 2TB card | add ~2 TB | 212 GB | all of the above + ~2 TB | n/a | +19 to 20 |
Usable space sources: TechRadar (Series X 1TB), The FPS Review (Series S 512GB), Swappa (Series S 1TB), TechSpot (Series X 2TB). Check Settings → System → Storage devices for your real number. A card shows up as slightly less than its label.
Can you play GTA 6 from a USB drive on Xbox?

No. Plan to play GTA 6 from the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card. GTA 6 is a Series X|S-only game. In Microsoft's Xbox Wire storage primer, USB 3.1 drives can store games optimized for Series X|S "for quick transfer and play," while the Expansion Card delivers "the exact same consistent, sustained, gameplay performance" as the internal SSD. Seagate's expansion card FAQ is more direct: optimized games have to be moved off an external drive to the internal SSD or a card before you can play them.
A USB drive is still useful, as a parking lot for everything else. Older Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games play straight from USB, and Series X|S games can sit there until you copy them back. More on that below.
Best Xbox Storage Expansion Card for GTA 6

The card to buy this week is the SanDisk Optimus GX C50 2TB at $479.99, sold and shipped by Amazon and in stock. Amazon US stock of Xbox cards is thin a week before pre-load. The standalone 1TB WD_BLACK C50 is "currently unavailable," and the Seagate 1TB card was offered only used when we checked. Here's what you can actually order:
| Pick | Card or drive | Capacity | Plays GTA 6 from it? | Price (Nov 7) | Stock / seller |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best card | SanDisk Optimus GX C50 2TB | 2TB | Yes | $479.99 | In stock, Amazon |
| Cheapest 1TB card | WD_BLACK C50 1TB + PowerA controller bundle | 1TB | Yes | $239.98 | Orderable, Amazon |
| Park your library | WD_BLACK P10 4TB Game Drive for Xbox | 4TB | No (storage only) | $244.99 | In stock, Amazon |
| Cheapest parking | Seagate Portable 5TB | 5TB | No (storage only) | $219.97 | In stock, Amazon |
Skip third-party listings marked far above these prices. When we checked, a 2TB WD_BLACK C50 was listed at $695 by a marketplace seller with 1 left.
Best card: SanDisk Optimus GX C50 2TB

The SanDisk Optimus GX C50 2TB is the C50 card sold under SanDisk's Optimus GX name, and it plugs into the expansion slot on the back of either console. On a 512GB Series S it takes you from about 152 GB free after GTA 6 to roughly 2 TB, so you stop juggling installs. The catch is the $479.99 price. If that stings, the bundle or the parking-lot drive below is the better move.
Cheapest 1TB card: WD_BLACK C50 1TB bundle

With the standalone 1TB card out of stock, the cheapest way to get an officially licensed 1TB card from Amazon right now is the WD_BLACK C50 1TB + PowerA Fusion Pro controller bundle at $239.98, sold by Amazon. You get a 1TB card that runs GTA 6 at internal-SSD speed, plus a pad. If the standalone card comes back in stock, that's the cheaper buy. We'll update this table if it does.

Cheapest fix: move everything else to a USB drive

If you don't want to spend $240 to $480, a USB hard drive frees space for GTA 6 for less. Move every game you aren't playing this month to the USB drive and keep GTA 6 on the internal SSD. Older Xbox One and backward-compatible games keep playing from USB. Series X|S games wait there until you copy them back, which is much faster than re-downloading.
- WD_BLACK P10 4TB Game Drive for Xbox ($244.99, sold by Amazon). It's built and branded for Xbox and the listing includes a month of Game Pass.
- Seagate Portable 5TB ($219.97, sold by Amazon). More space for less money. It's a plain USB 3.0 drive, which is all an Xbox needs for storage.

On a 512GB Series S this is the best-value move: park your library, keep GTA 6 and one other current game installed, and you're covered for launch.
How to pre-load GTA 6 on Xbox

Xbox pre-load opens at 12 a.m. GMT on Tuesday, November 10, at the same moment worldwide. That's 7 p.m. Eastern / 4 p.m. Pacific on Monday, November 9 in the US. Before then:
- Check free space under Settings → System → Storage devices. You need 212 GB on the drive GTA 6 will install to.
- If you're adding a card, plug it into the Storage Expansion slot on the back and set it as the default install location for games.
- Move older games to a USB drive if you need the room (Manage games and add-ons → select → Move).
- When pre-load opens, find GTA 6 under My games & apps → Full library → Owned games, or let it start on its own if automatic updates are on.

GTA 6 Xbox storage FAQ
Can the Xbox Series S run GTA 6 with no extra storage?
Yes, if you clear room. A 512GB Series S has about 364 GB usable, so GTA 6 fits with about 152 GB to spare. You'll be able to keep roughly one other big game installed alongside it.
Can I play GTA 6 from an external SSD on Xbox?
No. A USB SSD is faster for copying games back, but Series X|S games have to be played from the internal drive or a Storage Expansion Card. Only the card expands where you can play GTA 6 from.
Does the expansion card load GTA 6 slower than internal storage?
No. Microsoft says the Expansion Card was built to deliver the same sustained gameplay performance as the internal SSD.
Will GTA 6 get bigger after launch?
Probably. Rockstar's 212 GB is the pre-load figure, and a day-one patch is common for a launch this size. Keep 30 to 50 GB of headroom beyond the 212 GB if you can. We'll update this page with the installed size once pre-load opens.
The verdict
Series X owners can mostly get away with deleting a couple of games. Series S owners need a plan. The SanDisk Optimus GX C50 2TB ($479.99) ends the problem for good, the WD_BLACK C50 1TB bundle ($239.98) is the cheapest card you can order today, and a Seagate Portable 5TB ($219.97) is the cheapest way to make room if you're happy copying games back and forth.
