For most people buying a console for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), the best value is a PS5 Digital Edition plus a 1TB SSD, about $864 all-in. A PS5 Pro is worth it only at Sony's $899.99 list price. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar's official site badges it "Plays best on PlayStation 5." The PlayStation Store lists it as PS5 Pro Enhanced. Nobody has published confirmed resolution or frame-rate modes for any console yet, so this guide compares what you can actually check today: price, storage and the total cost to play.
Updated November 7, 2026. Amazon US prices checked the same day. We'll add confirmed performance modes once GTA 6 is out.
Which console should you buy for GTA 6?
If you already own a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S, keep it. Every one of them runs GTA 6, and the only upgrade you might need is storage. If you're buying new, use this:
- Best value: PS5 Digital Edition. A disc drive does nothing for GTA 6, because boxed copies are code-in-box and the full game downloads anyway.
- Best experience: PS5 Pro, but only at or near its $899.99 list price. It's the only GTA 6 console with a confirmed enhancement badge, and its 2TB drive means you won't need extra storage.
- Cheapest way in: Xbox Series S. Get the 1TB model if you can. The 512GB Series S has about 152 GB left after GTA 6.
- Already on Xbox: Xbox Series X. It's the most expensive non-Pro option, so it makes sense mainly if your library and friends are already on Xbox.
The real cost to play GTA 6 on each console

At list prices, the cheapest setup is the 512GB Xbox Series S at $579.98, and the PS5 Pro costs $979.98 all-in. Each total adds the GTA 6 Standard Edition ($79.99 on the PlayStation Store) to the console's list price. The last column adds the cheapest storage upgrade we recommend, so you have about 1 TB free after GTA 6 for your other games.
| Console | List price | Free space after GTA 6 | Console + GTA 6 | Storage to add for ~1 TB free | Total with storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S (512GB) | $499.99 | ~152 GB | $579.98 | 1TB card bundle, $239.98 | $819.96 |
| PS5 Digital Edition (825GB) | $599.99 | ~455 GB | $679.98 | 1TB M.2 SSD, $183.99 | $863.97 |
| Xbox Series S (1TB) | $599.99 | ~588 GB | $679.98 | 1TB card bundle, $239.98 | $919.96 |
| PS5 (1TB, disc) | $649.99 | ~636 GB | $729.98 | 1TB M.2 SSD, $183.99 | $913.97 |
| Xbox Series X Digital (1TB) | $749.99 | ~590 GB | $829.98 | 1TB card bundle, $239.98 | $1,069.96 |
| Xbox Series X (1TB, disc) | $799.99 | ~590 GB | $879.98 | 1TB card bundle, $239.98 | $1,119.96 |
| PS5 Pro (2TB) | $899.99 | ~1.68 TB | $979.98 | None needed | $979.98 |
List prices: PlayStation Blog (effective April 2, 2026) and Xbox Wire (+$100 on 512GB and +$150 on 1TB models from August 1, 2026; new US prices as listed by Pure Xbox). GTA 6 price: PlayStation Store. Free space uses Rockstar's "up to 212 GB" against each console's usable space, from our PS5 and Xbox storage guides. Storage prices: Amazon US, November 7, 2026.
Look at the bottom row next to the PS5 rows. At list price, a PS5 Pro costs only about $66 more than a disc PS5 with a 1TB SSD, and you get a 2TB drive plus the Pro enhancements. That math stops working at Amazon's current Pro price (below).
What each console is confirmed to run GTA 6 at

No console has confirmed resolution or frame-rate modes for GTA 6. Here's everything Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft have actually said, plus the one widely reported developer comment. We'll replace every "unconfirmed" with real numbers at launch.
| Console | Official status | Resolution | Frame rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 Pro | Launch platform. PlayStation Store lists it as "PS5 Pro Enhanced." | Unconfirmed, updating at launch | Unconfirmed, updating at launch |
| PS5 / PS5 Digital | Launch platform. Rockstar's site: "Plays best on PlayStation 5." | Unconfirmed, updating at launch | Reported 30fps (see below) |
| Xbox Series X | Launch platform (Rockstar lists Xbox Series X|S). | Unconfirmed, updating at launch | Unconfirmed, updating at launch |
| Xbox Series S | Launch platform (Rockstar lists Xbox Series X|S). | Unconfirmed, updating at launch | Unconfirmed, updating at launch |
"Plays best on PlayStation 5" is marketing-partner wording, not a performance claim. The PS5 Pro Enhanced label doesn't say what the enhancements are.
About that 30fps. In August, Kotaku reported, citing Brazilian outlet Flow Games, that Rockstar North's Rob Nelson said "the consoles are running the game at 30 frames per second" during development, and that the team still had to determine whether there would be a 60fps option at launch or later. That's a secondhand report from a preview captured on a base PS5, not a Rockstar spec sheet. Treat 30fps as the floor to plan for, and anything better on PS5 Pro as unconfirmed until launch.
Is the PS5 Pro worth it for GTA 6?

Yes at $899.99, no at $1,599.99. Amazon's own listing for the PS5 Pro 2TB was $1,599.99 on November 7, sold by Amazon with one unit left. That's $700 over Sony's list price, the kind of launch-week spike that usually falls back. Check PlayStation Direct and other retailers for list price before paying it.
At list price, the case is simple. It's the only console with a confirmed GTA 6 enhancement badge, and its 2TB drive leaves about 1.68 TB free after GTA 6, so you skip the SSD you'd likely buy for a base PS5. What you can't know yet is how big the enhancement is. If Rockstar ships 30fps everywhere and the Pro only gets a sharper image, the Pro is still the best-looking way to play, but it isn't a different game.
PS5 vs PS5 Digital for GTA 6

Get the Digital Edition and spend the difference on storage. Rockstar says boxed GTA 6 copies are code-in-box, so the disc drive on a standard PS5 does nothing for this game. Sony lists the Digital at $599.99 and the disc PS5 at $649.99. On Amazon both the PS5 Digital Edition and the PS5 1TB disc console were in stock and sold by Amazon on November 7, priced below list (Amazon shows the price in the cart).

The catch is space. The Digital Edition's 825GB drive has about 667 GB usable, so GTA 6 takes about a third of it. Add the Crucial P310 1TB with heatsink ($183.99) and you're at about $864 all-in, still cheaper than a disc PS5 with the same SSD. Our PS5 storage guide for GTA 6 covers which M.2 drives work and the full pick list.

Xbox Series X vs Series S for GTA 6

The Series S is the cheapest way to play GTA 6, but buy the 1TB model. Both run it at launch. The 512GB Series S has about 364 GB usable, so GTA 6 leaves about 152 GB, roughly one more big game. On November 7 Amazon had the Series S 512GB at $489.99 and the Series S 1TB at $598.00, both sold by Amazon. The Series S is the weakest GTA 6 console on paper, and Rockstar hasn't shown it running, so it's the one most likely to make visual cuts.

The Series X is the stronger Xbox, but at $799.99 list it costs more than a PS5 disc console and gets no confirmed GTA 6 extras. Amazon had no new Xbox Series X 1TB in its own stock on November 7, only other sellers' offers. Buy it if you're already invested in Xbox. Otherwise the PS5 lineup is the better GTA 6 buy at current prices. For expansion cards and why you can't play GTA 6 from a USB drive on Xbox, see our Xbox Series X|S storage guide for GTA 6.
Prices on Amazon today vs list price
Amazon is at or below list on every console it stocks except the PS5 Pro, and it had no Series X of its own. We'll keep this table current through launch week.
| Console | List price | Amazon US (Nov 7) | Stock / seller |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 Pro (2TB) | $899.99 | $1,599.99 | 1 left, Amazon |
| PS5 (1TB, disc) | $649.99 | Below list (price in cart) | In stock, Amazon |
| PS5 Digital Edition (825GB) | $599.99 | Below list (price in cart) | In stock, Amazon |
| Xbox Series X (1TB, disc) | $799.99 | Not in Amazon's stock | Other sellers only |
| Xbox Series S (1TB) | $599.99 | $598.00 | In stock, Amazon |
| Xbox Series S (512GB) | $499.99 | $489.99 | In stock, Amazon |
Do you need extra storage for GTA 6?
Only on the 512GB Series S, and on a PS5 Digital if you keep other big games installed. Rockstar's pre-load announcement says it needs up to 212 GB, and pre-load opens November 10, so storage is the one thing to sort out this week. Our cheapest picks that work, priced November 7:
- PS5 (any model): Crucial P310 1TB with heatsink, $183.99, or the Lexar NM790 2TB with heatsink, $334.99, the best value per terabyte.
- Xbox Series X|S: WD_BLACK C50 1TB expansion card + controller bundle, $239.98. The standalone 1TB card was out of stock when we checked.

GTA 6 console FAQ
Does GTA 6 need a PS5 Pro?
No. GTA 6 runs on every PS5, and Rockstar's own site says it plays best on PlayStation 5, not specifically the Pro. The Pro is listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced, but the enhancements haven't been detailed.
Will GTA 6 run at 60fps on consoles?
Unconfirmed. The most-cited report says console builds ran at 30fps during development and that a 60fps option was still undecided. We'll update this answer with Rockstar's actual modes at launch.
Is GTA 6 on PS4 or Xbox One?
No. The PlayStation Store says it's "not playable on PlayStation 4," and Rockstar lists only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for the November 19 launch.
Is GTA 6 coming to PC at launch?
Not at launch. Rockstar's GTA VI site lists only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for November 19, 2026, and no PC version.
Does a disc drive matter for GTA 6?
Not for installing it. Rockstar says boxed copies are code-in-box, so every version downloads the full game. That's why the PS5 Digital Edition is our value pick.
The verdict
Already own a PS5 or Series X|S? Keep it and check your storage. Buying new, the PS5 Digital Edition plus a 1TB SSD is the best value at about $864. The PS5 Pro is the best GTA 6 console at its $899.99 list price, and only about $66 more all-in than a disc PS5 with an SSD. Skip it at $1,599.99. The Series S is the cheapest way in, but buy the 1TB model. We'll update this page with confirmed resolution and frame-rate modes as soon as GTA 6 is out.
