Sea of Stars only gives you six party members. That's not a small cast — it's an opinionated cast. Sabotage Studio built the entire combat system around combo attacks, lock-breaking, and elemental coverage, then handed you exactly enough characters to test how seriously you're paying attention.

After Dawn of Equinox added MP regen on combos and rebalanced the back half of the game, the actual tier list looks nothing like the one most reviewers write. The protagonists you spend the most hours with? They're not S-tier. The "wholesome friend" most people rank last? He's broken.

Here's the real ranking for 2026, based on how the game actually plays — not how it markets itself.

How I'm Ranking These Characters

Sea of Stars rewards system mastery, not character favoritism. The four metrics that actually matter once you're past Brisk:

  • Combo utility — how many top-tier Combos a character anchors. Combos cost shared Combo Points, hit hard, and break specific lock types. Some characters appear in five different combos. Some appear in two.
  • Lock-break coverage — Sea of Stars' boss design relies on lock symbols that countdown to massive enemy attacks. The character roster's job is to nuke locks before the timer hits zero. Coverage breadth is everything.
  • MP and SP economy — Dawn of Equinox added MP regen on Combos, which dramatically buffed mages with cheap spammable spells. Characters whose best skills cost manageable MP stay in the rotation longer.
  • Late-game and boss scaling — early-game power means little when bosses start hitting four-digit damage. The question is who still pulls weight at the Solstice Shrines, the True Final boss, and the Throes of the Watchmaker DLC bosses.

If you rank by story importance, Zale and Valere are obviously the leads. But that's not what wins fights — and the post-DLC meta has made that gap wider, not smaller.

S Tier — The Combo Engine

Resh'an appears in four of the five strongest combos in the game. Arcane Moons (with Valere) is the highest single-combo damage in the cast and removes both Moon and Arcane locks. Venom Bomb (with Garl) is the cheapest multi-hit ability you can spam in trash fights. Arcane Barrage (with Serai) deletes single targets and delays the boss turn counter by up to two ticks. Conflagrate (with Zale) is the AoE Sun + Arcane lock breaker that carries Wyrd-style fights. He's the connective tissue. After Dawn of Equinox added MP regen on combos, his already-elite mage stats and cheap-spell coverage tipped him from "great" to "broken."

Garl is the most slept-on combat character in any 2023+ JRPG. Mainstream rankings put him last because they conflate "wholesome friend" with "combat liability." That's wrong. Garl is the only character with reliable taunt, the only one with affordable AoE heal (Time For Lunch), and one of two characters with universal blunt-lock coverage. His Hammer Bash breaks Sword and Blunt locks at once. He's also the Venom Bomb partner Resh'an needs to make trash fights trivial. If you sideline Garl because the game framed him as a support character, you're playing the game one role short.

If you only run two characters all game, run these two. The other slot is matchup-dependent.

A Tier — The Lock-Break Specialist

Serai joins the party with the highest base Speed stat in the cast — and Speed in this combat system means turns, and turns mean Combo Points, and Combo Points mean S Tier combos go off twice per fight instead of once. Beyond raw turn economy, she anchors the single best general-purpose lock breaker in the game: X-Strike with Zale strips Venom + Sword + Sun locks across all enemies in three hits. There is no boss in Sea of Stars where X-Strike is the wrong opener.

Venom Flurry is the highest single-target damage in the cast — three guaranteed kunai hits, plus up to ten more if your timed inputs hold. Pair her with Resh'an for Arcane Barrage and you have a single-target nuke that also stalls boss turns. The only reason she's A and not S: she's matchup-dependent. Against multi-enemy lock-break problems she's elite. Against single-target slugfests where the boss has Moon or Arcane locks, Resh'an + Valere clear faster. She's the third pick in almost every party — never the carry, always the difference-maker.

B Tier — The Solstice Warriors

Here's where the comments section catches fire. Zale and Valere are the protagonists, the lore engine, and the emotional core of the game — and in pure combat math, they belong in B Tier.

Zale's kit peaks around the Wind Mine and never quite re-peaks. Sunball is great early. Dash Strike is fine. His ultimate, Sun Ball, is a strong boss-finisher but expensive. The honest read: Zale's value is almost entirely in the combos he anchors. X-Strike with Serai is one of the best abilities in the game — but Serai is doing the heavy lifting. Conflagrate with Resh'an is great — but Resh'an is the engine. Solo, Zale's outpaced by Serai on speed, by Resh'an on magic, and by Garl on utility. He's not bad. He's just outclassed.

Valere is in the same boat. Her Moonerang can stack devastating Moon damage when fully spun up, and Arcane Moons with Resh'an is the strongest single-combo damage in the cast. But the ceiling is set by the partner, not the character. As a solo damage dealer she's again outpaced. Her unique value is being the only character with both Moon damage type and Blunt lock-break — which means specific late-game encounters demand her. That's a floor, not a ceiling.

The Solstice Warriors are required for the story and for any Sun-or-Moon-locked enemy. They're never benched. They're just rarely the player carrying the team.

C Tier — The Wildcard

B'st joins the party at Lost One's Hamlet, deep into the back half. By the time he arrives, your established three are levels ahead, your relics are tuned, and your muscle memory for X-Strike and Arcane Moons is locked in. B'st walks into a finished party and asks you to relearn the rotation.

That's the C-tier framing — for casual play, B'st is a square peg in a round-hole party. His skills are powerful in isolation but his combos are middling, his lock-break coverage overlaps with characters you already have, and his MP costs are punishing without dedicated relic investment.

The caveat: if you build around B'st instead of around him, he climbs. Speedrunners and boss-rush enthusiasts rate him A Tier because his Trapped Beast skill stuns bosses on a clean timed input, and his stat ceiling on the right relic loadout exceeds Valere's. The "C" is for the player who treats him as a fourth wheel. The S-tier B'st player exists — it's just not the default experience.

If you're a completionist and you've already done the True Final ending once, your second playthrough should be a B'st-anchored team. He's not bad. He's a different game.

Best Party Composition

Sea of Stars only lets three characters fight at once, with the back row swappable mid-turn. Here are the three comps that actually carry the late game and DLC.

  • Boss-fight default: Resh'an + Garl + Serai. Resh'an for combo coverage and magic burst, Garl for taunt and heal, Serai for X-Strike and single-target nukes. This party clears every Solstice Shrine and the True Final boss without much MP economy stress.
  • Lock-break problem solver: Zale + Serai + Valere. The full Solstice trio plus the speed dealer. Use this when an encounter has Sun + Moon + Sword + Venom locks and you need every type covered with one swap. X-Strike opens, Arcane Moons closes (sub Resh'an in), and you never lose tempo.
  • Throes of the Watchmaker DLC team: Resh'an + Valere + B'st. The DLC bosses lean into Arcane and Moon locks, which makes Arcane Moons the centerpiece combo. B'st's Trapped Beast stuns work on the new boss roster and his lateral build flexibility shines when you have endgame relics to spend.

The Final Take

Sea of Stars is a game that rewards system mastery over story attachment. The mainstream tier lists rank Zale and Valere first because they're who the game asks you to care about. The combat math says otherwise: Resh'an is the engine, Garl is the floor, Serai is the spike, and the Solstice Warriors are the necessary connective tissue.

That's the read in 2026, after Dawn of Equinox shifted the meta and Throes of the Watchmaker added new boss patterns to test the cast against. If your party feels like it's running uphill, the answer is almost always "more Resh'an."
