Sephiroth is Final Fantasy Resonance's optional superboss, and beating him is the only way to unlock his Vision. He's level 45 with 250,000 HP, he changes his weaknesses mid-fight, and one of his attacks drops your whole party to near death. Most players will hit a wall the first time. This guide covers where to find him, what level to fight him at, and how to beat each phase, using a party built from our Final Fantasy Resonance best builds guide.

  • Where: Whirlpool Hollow, a whirlpool between the islands of Grandshelt. You need the airship, which you get at the end of Chapter 4.
  • Level: 45 at minimum; the game suggests 50.
  • Stats: level 45, 250,000 HP, acts two to three times a turn.
  • The rule: magic while his Phase 1 stance is up, match his Infusion's weakness in Phase 2, Light in Phase 3. Never hit him with Dark at the end.
  • Reward: the Sephiroth Vision, 14,500 EXP and 12,000 Gil.

Updated October 24, 2026. Square Enix hasn't published boss data, so the numbers here come from fan databases that compiled them from the game (MeowDB, ffresonance.wiki, Game8) and from early guides. Where sources disagree, we say so.

Where to Find Sephiroth: Whirlpool Hollow

Sephiroth waits at Whirlpool Hollow, a whirlpool in the sea next to the large bridge between Grandshelt's islands. Game8 places it between the two islands; VGC's guide describes it as north of Grandshelt, out at sea. You can only reach it by airship, which you get when you finish Chapter 4, so the fight opens up at the start of Chapter 5. ffresonance.wiki says you can walk up to him early, but every other guide we checked says you need the airship.

Land the airship on the whirlpool to go inside. You'll find a Vision Crystal that looks like a Sanctum of Light. Interacting with it starts the challenge. Save manually before you touch it. We haven't confirmed whether you can retry from the crystal after a loss, and a wipe here costs a lot of time.

Fight him at level 45 or higher. PowerPyx puts the floor at 45, the game itself suggests 50, and some early guides recommend waiting until Chapter 6. If you're under 45, finish more of Chapter 5 first.

You need four things: a tank, a dedicated healer, magic damage for Phase 1, and enough elements to answer all four Infusions in Phase 2. Every pick below comes from our best Vision for each character picks, so if you've followed that guide you're already most of the way there.

Character (Vision)Job in this fightElements it brings
Rain (Warrior of Light)Tank: Protect, Cure, Multi-Cover from Mastery Rank 3Earth (answers the Lightning Infusion), Light (Phase 3)
Fina (Leah)Healer: party heals, Regen, healing above max HPLight (Phase 3)
Nichol (Tronn)Magic damage and staggerFire (answers Ice), Ice (answers Wind), Lightning
Sakura (Terra)Magic damage; Terra's Resonance ignores elemental resistanceWater (answers Fire), plus Fire and Ice backup

That party answers every Infusion with magic, has two sources of Light for the finish, and carries no Dark. Leave Dark-element characters at home: he absorbs Dark in Phase 3.

Backup plan: Water comes only from Sakura and Earth only from Rain, so losing either leaves an Infusion unanswered. Terra's Resonance ignores elemental resistance, and KeenGamer notes Light stays neutral through every Infusion, so Rain and Fina's Light attacks are a safe fallback.

Alternative: ffresonance.wiki's suggested team swaps in Lasswell on Aileen (for Shellga) and Nichol on Clive (for Waterga and Aqua Blast), keeping Rain on Warrior of Light and Fina on Leah. KeenGamer suggests Lid's Mechamog Scan, which adds a random elemental weakness.

Bring revive items and plenty of healing items, and make sure someone has a party-wide heal. You'll need it every time he uses Heartless Angel.

Phase 1: Magic During the Stance (100% to 80% HP)

Sephiroth acts twice per turn and has no elemental weakness in the opening phase. He takes 60% less magic damage, so physical attacks do most of the work, except while his Masamune in Waiting stance is up: it blocks physical attacks and counters them. Switch to magic (Nichol and Sakura) during the stance, and go physical again when it drops.

Watch for these:

  • Boundless Void: two hits with a 50% chance to paralyze.
  • Purging Blade: Dark damage that inflicts Deprotect and Deshell. Reapply Protect straight after.
  • Hell's Gate: hits the whole party.
  • Firaga, Blizzaga, Thundaga and Aeroga: three hits each.

Sources disagree on where this phase ends: ffresonance.wiki says 80% HP, KeenGamer says 75%. KeenGamer reports an immune turn at the transition, followed by One-Winged Angel; ffresonance.wiki says the transition refills his stagger gauge. Don't waste your big attacks on the gauge right before he crosses the threshold.

Phase 2: Match the Infusion (80% to 20% HP)

This is the long phase, and the one that decides the fight. Sephiroth now acts three times per turn and cycles through four elemental Infusions. Each Infusion boosts his attacks of that element by 30% and makes him counter non-elemental attacks with that element's -ga spell. So every attack you make should carry an element, and ideally the one he's weak to right now.

InfusionWeak toWho hits itSignature attackWhat it does
FireWaterSakura (Terra)FlamewallHalves ATK and MAG for 3 turns
IceFireNichol (Tronn) or Sakura (Terra)FrostspikeSlow for 3 turns
LightningEarthRain (Warrior of Light)ThunderstormParalysis for 2 turns
WindIceNichol (Tronn) or Sakura (Terra)WindwailSilence for 2 turns

KeenGamer adds that he's immune to whichever element he's infused with, so never answer Fire with Fire, and that other elements deal half damage while an Infusion is up.

Get him pressured. If your party survives an Infusion's signature attack with nobody knocked out, Sephiroth becomes pressured. He hits harder, but his stagger gauge drops from 3,500 to 1,350, which is your window to break him and take his turns away. Hitting his current weakness also pressures him, and that's the main way to do it. Stagger is how you win this phase, not raw damage.

Between Infusions he uses his heaviest attacks:

  • Heartless Angel: drops the whole party to near death. Heal everyone on your next turn, before anything else.
  • Octaslash: eight hits that can bypass survival effects, so don't count on a KO-prevention effect saving you.
  • Nihilistic Solitude: Dark damage that removes your buffs.
  • Darkga and Graviga: heavy magic.

Both guides list Heartless Angel between Infusions, and KeenGamer adds that he opens Phase 3 with it too, setting everyone to 1 HP. Plan for it in both phases.

Phase 3: Light and the Countdown (Final 20%)

Once Sephiroth drops to about 50,000 HP, his weakness becomes Light and he starts absorbing Dark. A countdown of fate also starts, and when it reaches zero he uses Divine Proclamation on the whole party. He still acts three times per turn. We haven't confirmed how many turns the countdown runs, so treat this as a damage race.

This is where you spend everything you saved. Rain on Warrior of Light and Fina on Leah both carry Light, Leah's kit includes Banish, and any Limit Bursts and Resonances you held back should go here. Keep healing through it: losing a healer this late is the most common way to throw the fight.

Tips That Save a Retry

  • Save first. Make a manual save before you touch the Vision Crystal.
  • Don't over-stack buffs. Sephiroth has a special attack that triggers once enough of your party is buffed. We haven't confirmed the exact number, so buff the tank and the attacker you're relying on, not everyone at once.
  • Every hit needs an element in Phase 2. Non-elemental attacks get countered with -ga spells.
  • Casual is fine. If you keep wiping, drop the difficulty. KeenGamer says every trophy works on Casual. Expect it to stay hard on Casual too.

Rewards for Beating Sephiroth

Winning unlocks the Sephiroth Vision, plus 14,500 EXP and 12,000 Gil. He can also drop a Magicite Cryst, which unlocks Sephiroth's third awakening (Meteor and One-Winged Angel). ffresonance.wiki lists it as a standard drop; KeenGamer puts the base drop chance at 12%. There's no Sephiroth-specific trophy that we've found, but he counts toward Will Crystallized, the trophy for collecting all 26 Visions.

Is the Sephiroth Vision Worth It?

Sephiroth raises one hand in a CG scene from Final Fantasy Resonance
Image: Square Enix

Yes, especially on a physical character. ffresonance.wiki lists him as a Commando and MeowDB as a physical attacker. His Resonance, True Octaslash, is eight non-elemental physical hits on every enemy, and his starting kit includes Boundless Void (stagger 33 with a chance to paralyze), Dark Surge and Physical Attack +30%. Later awakenings add Firaga, Blizzaga and Thundaga, Curaga, Meteor and One-Winged Angel, which regenerates HP and MP each turn.

His Mastery Ranks lean hard into crits: Critical Hit Rate +20% at Mastery Rank 3, and Ultimate Aggression at Mastery Rank 5, which guarantees critical hits on Limit Bursts and Resonances. That makes him a natural fit for Lasswell, the crit-leaning physical Breaker in our builds guide. The sources still disagree on his element list (Game8 lists Ice, Lightning, Fire, Dark and Recovery; ffresonance.wiki lists Dark, Fire, Ice and Lightning). Our Visions tier list grades him A-tier: strong, but a late unlock behind the hardest fight in the game.

Sephiroth Boss Guide: FAQ

Where is Sephiroth in Final Fantasy Resonance?

When can you fight Sephiroth?

From the start of Chapter 5, once you have the airship.

What level should you be to beat Sephiroth?

At least 45, and the game suggests 50. He's level 45 with 250,000 HP.

What is Sephiroth weak to?

Nothing in Phase 1. In Phase 2 it depends on his Infusion: Water against Fire, Fire against Ice, Earth against Lightning and Ice against Wind. In Phase 3 he's weak to Light and absorbs Dark.

Can you get Sephiroth as a Vision?

Yes. Beating him at Whirlpool Hollow unlocks the Sephiroth Vision, one of the game's 26 Visions.

The Bottom Line

Sephiroth is a test of elemental coverage, which is the same thing the rest of Final Fantasy Resonance rewards. Bring magic for the opening, answer every Infusion with its weakness, keep a healer alive through Heartless Angel, and save your Light for the last 20%.
